Seat of Empire Co-sponsored Discussion Group

In conjunction with the 10th anniversary of WTO, The Race/Knowledge Project invites you to Shaun Scott's DVD release of SEAT OF EMPIRE. Come and celebrate by viewing a short excerpt from the film's second half, followed by a discussion about race, culture, and the history of Seattle.

SEAT OF EMPIRE sings the story of the social and environmental struggles that have shaped Seattle. From the Duwamish to the domed stadium, Bill Boeing to Bill Gates, the IWW and Philippine laborers to the Post-WWII boom that brought Seattle to unprecedented national prominence, SEAT OF EMPIRE explores the cross-sections of environmental sacrifice, military development, and municipal struggles over space and resources. The film is one artist’s contribution to the small but growing canon of poetic reconstructions of our city’s history that began with Murray Morgan’s “Skid Road”.

Wednesday, December 9th, 7-8:30 pm
Communications 226, University of Washington
Event is free of charge and open to the general public
DVDs of the film will be available for purchase

SEAT OF EMPIRE was produced by Shaun Scott and funded by The Seattle Mayor's Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs. This event is co-sponsored by Shaun Scott and the Race/Knowledge Project, a funded research cluster of the UW Simpson Center for the Humanities.

We will be talking about his racial rhetoric, the significance of his racialized body and the limits and possibilities that his campaign and ascendancy to US president yield.-- Facilitators: Sooja, and Sydney.   To download the reading(s) click on the link above or at the bottom of the page.
